One to two months prior to move decide if you are going to move yourself or if you are going to use a mover.
If using a mover, make reservations.
Fill out the Change of Address form at the Post Office.
Contact accountants, alumni associations, clubs, catalog merchants, stock broker, etc.
Close accounts with your local businesses (small charge accounts, cleaners, health clubs, country clubs, library, etc).
Take inventory of all your belongings.
Obtain all of your records including medical records, birth certificates and passports, pet records, children's school records, and any other important records.
Begin packing items that aren't used frequently.

In the weeks prior to move

    Begin using up perishable items.
Make backup files for your computer.
Transfer checking and savings accounts if needed.
Cancel all utilities (Telephone, Gas, Electric, Water, Trash, Cable, Newspaper, Internet Service, etc).
Drain oil and gas from lawn mowers, weed eaters, boats, etc.
Enroll children in their new school.

The night prior to move out

Empty, clean, and defrost the refrigerator.
    Get plenty of rest.
Pack a "Supply Box" for Move Out day. This should contain:
    Cleaning materials " Kitchen materials
    Snacks " Water
    Tools " Bath materials

    Locating a Mover and Supplies

    Mover
Select a mover and arrange an on-site estimate for accuracy.
    Get references from prospective mover.
Check their standing with the Better Business Bureau.

    Supplies
Packing materials (bubble wrap, newspaper, string, baggies, markers, etc).
    Cleaning materials.
    Appliance dolly.
Wrenches, screw drivers, tape, scissors, knife and other tools.
    Many different sized boxes.
    Drinking water and cups.

    Engaging in a "House-Wide" Cleanup

Before packing, clean each room from top to bottom.
    Gather unwanted items.
If possible, hold a garage sale or donate items to local charities.
Clean behind large appliances (refrigerator, oven, sofas, etc).
    Shampoo carpet.
Begin arranging items in a way to pack them.

    Arranging a Labeling System

Create a labeling system that appeals to you.
You can use different colored markers.
Number all the boxes and record which room they belong in on a separate sheet of paper.
Label boxes in the way you want them loaded (Do Not Load, Load First, Load Last).

    Starting to Pack

Begin packing early since it will take you longer than expected.
Start at the top of the home and work downward.
Pack one room at a time.
First pack the items that are used seasonally and infrequently.
Empty all drawers and items that can be spilled or damaging during the move (clothing type articles may remain in drawers).
Pack vertically so contents will be snug during move.
Pack like items together and remember to keep all necessary parts together.
Pack heavy items first (limit 50 lbs per box).
Label boxes using a labeling system.
Wrap items tightly and provide plenty of cushioning.
Insure that all boxes are packed tightly to avoid rattling. However, avoid over packing.
Fill all empty spaces in the box with some type of packing material.
Don't forget to label every box and seal them tightly (top and bottom) with tape to avoid damage to items

Undergoing Move Out and Move In

    Move Out Day
Stay with movers to double check all your inventory.
    Notify movers of fragile material.
Double check the new address with movers.
Have multiple people do a thorough walk thru of the old house.
Strip all bedding material and put in a box that will be loaded last.
Make sure all utilities are disconnected.
Keep an empty box handy to put supplies in and last minute items (toilet articles, clothes, bath towels, etc).

    Move In
    Have unloading plan available.
Have a person designated to guide boxes into the proper rooms.

    Returning or Recycling Boxes

If you have borrowed boxes from a moving company be sure to return all the boxes, empty and flattened.
If you obtained your own boxes, flatten them and put them in recycling bins or donate the boxes that are in good condition.

    Advance Unpacking Plan

Measure your new quarters and the largest pieces of furniture in advance. Make a sketch of each room with squares, rectangles and circles representing where your furniture pieces will go.
Pay attention to where outlets are on the walls so you can easily plug in your audio and visual systems and computers.
Provide a copy of your plan to your mover or designate someone to direct while the unloading is under way.
Unpack one room at a time. Start with the bathroom, making sure that you have all the necessary supplies ? especially a shower curtain, soap and toilet paper. Then move on to the kitchen so that you can have a snack when you get hungry to keep your energy up.
Line your shelves and drawers before unpacking
Save the unessential items for later when it is easier to assess the proper setup.
Install special shelving in closets before unpacking items to store. Do the same in the garage by installing hooks and shelves for tools and supplies. A little organization in the beginning will make your new home more enjoyable.

    Bonus Tips

Pack all glasses standing on one end and not on their sides.
    Pack plates on their edge.
Always pack extra cushion on the top and bottom of every box.
Never pack heavy items and fragile items together.
If you are moving large glass items, heavy wall ornaments, or mirrors, use a professional crate for the items to ensure their safety. This also includes chandeliers, antiques, statues, and any other large, breakable items.

    What Our Customers Say:

ABC has done three moves for my family: my sister, my brother and myself. From everything that I have seen, all of the employees are courteous, on time, and very conscientious about preventing damage to furniture. It was 1, 2, 3, and everything was out. Once at the new location, everything was put precisely where we wanted it. I have nothing but praise for them.
    Sue Mannion

I thought they were very prompt. I thought they packed everything very well. I thought they were very polite. And, I thought the move was priced fairly.
    - Frank Brewer

Excellent. Mary was wonderful and they did everything as promised. During the move they communicated with me if I had any questions. After the move Mary called to make sure everything went well.
